Keynote Speaker
The NWCLTC is excited to announce Jonathan Tarleton as our 2026 Gathering keynote speaker!
Jonathan is an urban planner, designer, and writer based in Washington, DC. He seeks out opportunities for transformative change that reckon with enduring inequities of race and class and strengthen economic democracy, social infrastructure, and community capacity. His work spans the fields of economic development, housing, and narrative change. He writes broadly about stewardship of place, land, institutions, and communities.
His book, Homes for Living – on the struggle among residents of two social housing co-ops as they decide whether to privatize and profit from the public goods they own – was named a Best Book of 2025 by The New Yorker. Through that lens, Tarleton argues that expanding permanently affordable housing requires more than a financial case: it requires changing hearts and minds about our relationship to homes and housing. He challenges us to think about housing not as a private commodity but as a common pool resource, one that demands intentional, community-centered governance to ensure broad and lasting access.
Jonathan’s work offers a deeply relevant exploration of long-term stewardship, democratic ownership, and the pressures communities face under speculative housing markets. This is relevant not only to CLTs in our region who are already pursuing or considering adding limited equity housing projects as part of their permanently affordable housing strategies, but to our movement in general.
And for CLTs not currently pursuing the LEHC model, there is still much to gain from Jonathan’s analysis of how community-controlled housing navigates questions of privatization, collective governance, permanence, and shared responsibility. At a time when housing is increasingly treated as a commodity rather than a public good, we believe this conversation is relevant to all shared equity practitioners, organizers, and supporters working toward the decommodification of housing and stronger community ownership models.
